More than 70% of filers in 2019 reported information in Box 7 of form 1099-Misc. This year, the IRS is requiring those filers to user form 1099-NEC instead of 1099-Misc. If you need to report non-employee compensation for the tax year 2020 you will need form 1099-NEC.

What is NEC?

If the following four conditions are met, you must generally report a payment as NEC.

§ You made the payment to someone who is not your employee
§ You made the payment for services in the course of your trade of business (including government agencies and nonprofit organizations).
§ You made the payment to an individual, partnership, estate, or, in some cases, a corporation.
§ You made payments to the payee of at least $600 during the year.

Forms are 3-up on an 8 ½” x 11” sheet with no side perforation and are printed on 20# laser paper. Order the quantity equal to the number of employees for which you need to file.

Use the 1099-NEC Copy A to print and mail payment information to the IRS. Forms are printed with required red scannable ink. Mail in a batch to the IRS.

Use the 1099-NEC Copy B to print and mail payment information to the recipient (payee) for submission with their federal tax return. Mail in envelope #RDWENV05.

Use the 1099-NEC Copy C for Payer files. Mail in envelope #RDWENV05.

Use the 1099-NEC Copy 1 to print and mail payment information to the State. Mail as a batch to the state.

Use the 1099-NEC Copy 2 to print and mail payment information to the recipient (payee) for submission with their state tax return. Mail in envelope #RDWENV05.
